Learning to think with your hands: linking past and present

A Presentation by Professor Linda Hurcombe

What is the role of Bushcraft in academia, and what can archaeology offer to Bushcraft? In trying to understand artefacts and evidence from the past, my own learning has moved from books to practical experiments. Bushcraft and traditional crafts provide insights into the ancient past. Yet still the archaeological evidence allows us to rediscover some of the knowledge and skills that have not survived to the present day. The presentation will cover some of the archaeological evidence for Bushcraft skills from earliest prehistory but also show that offering students ways to think with their hands better suits a wide range of different learning styles.
